I'm baaaaack

After not having posted here for over a year... and not having even updated TV's Greatest Hits for nearly that long... after resolving some personal issues that demanded my complete attention, I'm back! The site is back!

There are still no new midi files at this time, but I'm hoping to change that in the near future. Meanwhile, it is now once again possible to view many of your favorite TV shows at TV's Greatest Hits. The database is being updated with new titles daily and all of the dead links are gone. You can watch the latest episodes of some NEW shows, including ABC's Flash Forward. We hope to be able to include V after its premiere in November.

Is there something in particular that you would like to see? Come to the site and drop me a line.

Meanwhile, settle in with some old favorites, including Hawaii Five-0, Star Trek, The Incredible Hulk, Stargate SG-1 and more!

Stay tuned.

Chuck Norris smacks down Arrianna Huffington

It wasn't until the show was off the air and in re-runs on The Hallmark Channel that I became a fan of Walker: Texas Ranger. Even though I was aware of Chuck Norris, I didn't really consider myself a fan... until I got into watching Walker. In recent months, my guilty pleasure has been watching Walker kick some serious bad guy butt!

Today, a friend pointed out this recording of a recent CNN telelcast of Larry King Live in which he is interviewing Arianna Huffington and Chuck Norris. First, after reading about Arianna Huffington, I have to say that it seems to me that she suffers from a crisis of identity. Second, I really enjoyed watching Chuck Norris verbally butt-kick her!!

Huffington presumes to speak for the troops in Iraq when she's never met or spoken with any one of them. On the other hand, Chuck Norris has been there twice and spoken directly with them. Based on these facts, who do you think has a better idea of what is actually going on over there?

Link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EzD84QQv_6g

And for Huffington to suggest that Norris is sexist because he keeps interrupting her?!? How many liberals use exactly the same tactic and no one ever calls them on it? By the way, Norris is more than likely voting McCain/Palin. If he was sexist, I don't think he'd be going that route.

In fact, for Huffington to play the gender card... It all really is like a card game, isn't it? The gender card. The race card. Politics seems to be all about knowing when to play them. Huffington erred. There's a lot more I could say on the matter, but I'll reserve my comments for a later time.

As the presidential race heats up, it is rapidly becoming a "take no prisoners" battle for the White House. Norris is right: Barack Obama is not the man for the job. I'll personally go on record as saying that it has nothing to do with his race (as CNN might have you believe).
It has to do with his qulaifications... or lack thereof.

Finally, I personally want a patriot as the leader of my country. That is, someone who loves it as much as I do... who is not afraid to place his hand over his heart during the Pledge of Allegience or the National Anthem... and maybe even recite and/or sing along. From what I've seen, this is not Barack Obama... and to a large degree, this isn't anyone in the mainstream media (the same folks who, by the way, unabashedly endorse Senator Obama).

I'll comment more later on being an American and what it means to me.

Finally, as for the video above... Go, Chuck!! You've just made me an even bigger fan and if I ever meet you in person, I owe you a good, hearty handshake! :-)

Star Trek's George Takei gets married

Unless you're living somewhere beyond the Romulan Neutral Zone or you have been stuck in a temporal causality loop, you probably know that Star Trek's George Takei (Mr. Sulu) publicly revealed a few years ago that he was gay.

It was reported yesterday (Sept 15, 2008) that George Takei, 71, married his longtime partner, Brad Altman, 54, in a Buddhist ceremony in Los Angeles. Some of Takei's Star Trek co-stars were present, including Walter Koenig (Mr. Chekov), and matron of honor, Nichelle Nichols (Uhura).

Star Trek outside of the TV series...

I love YouTube! For on-demand entertainment, you can't beat it. Sure, it's chock full of stupid stuff... including people showing off their prowess at breaking wind. However, once in a while, you find some gems.

For this entry, I'm going to be specific when I cite some examples of cool stuff. Here is a collection of Star Trek-related advertising over the years that was tastefully well done. Check 'em out...

MCI ad from 1992

DirecTV from 2006

National Power and PowerGen (1980s)

PriceLine (Who's in Shatner's room?)

PriceLine (Shatner's out as the spokesman)

PriceLine (Shatner appeals)

KFC ad (year unknown -- 2008?)

Saw this on a T-Shirt...

And now for a word...

Want this on a T-Shirt or coffee mug?
www.cafepress.com/politicalviews

With the upcoming presidential election and the hot topics like war, terrorism, fuel costs and the economy, it's a safe bet that you'll be seeing more coverage than ever before!

It's more important than ever to choose the right candidate for the office of president. By definition, he should be willing and able to defend our country. That also means he should be a patriot.

In this author's opinion, that man is not Barack Obama. He will not pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of America (I wonder why not?), nor will he wear a U.S. flag lapel pin (I wonder why not?). If a man cannot bring himself to perform these simple actions to display an affection for and affiliation with our country, then how can he be fit to lead our country? I'm left to wonder about what motivates him to want to lead our country.

There are those who say he will stop the war in Iraq. Indeed, he will end the War on Terror. What message will it send to our as-yet-undefeated enemies if we just pack up our trash and pull out?

I'm not necessarily a big John McCain fan (although I really do like his choice for a running mate, Sarah Palin), but Barack Hussein Obama is NOT the right man for the job.

And check THIS out! In this video, Obama actually ADMITS his Muslim faith! That is, until George Stephanopoulos reminds him of his "Christian faith."

Note: Strangely, this video is no longer available. I wonder why that is? You can still read about it here.

By the way, if Mr. Obama is "deeply offended" by those who accuse him of not being who or what he says he is, perhaps it's because actions speak far louder than words. Incidentally, no one put those words into his mouth... He said them himself.

When TV pulls the plug on YOU

Have you ever watched a TV series from the very beginning and become so enamored of it that you made it a point to watch it every week? Was the writing so smart and the acting so spot on that you found yourself drawn to the characters, even caring what happens to them?

Then the network pulls the plug.

The TV series you've looked forward to and enjoyed week after week is suddenly gone. No good explanations. The actors are fired. The producers have moved on to other projects. Something lame has replaced your former favorite on the network's schedule.

It's not fair. Life isn't fair, we're told. I have to ask why not?

My new favorite television show last season was NBC's Journeyman. It had all the qualities of good television. So why didn't it last?

The demise of Journeyman has not been explained to my satisfaction. NBC claims poor ratings that only declined as time progressed. However, NBC's promotion and support of the series was virtually non-existent. Meanwhile, every other ad on NBC was for one of the many "reality" series that NBC airs. I will not give further promotion by mentioning them here.

Journeyman was well written and well acted. The emphasis was not one the science fiction aspect, but on the people involved. It asked the question "What if you could change what was for the better?" The premise of the story was similar to Quantum Leap in that it involved a time traveler who had no control over when and where he would go, and that his "mission" was to change events for the better. But that's where the similarities ended.

Where Quantum Leap could sometimes become cheesy and maybe even a little campy, and didn't necessarily take itself seriously, Journeyman never became that.

The lead character, Dan Vasser, is suddenly and involuntarily thrust back in time. He has trouble explaining to his wife what has happened... and she doesn't believe him anyway.

Imagine that you're a woman and your husband disappears for hours or even days at a time. What would you think? Even if he was upgrading your wedding ring for your anniversary?

During one of his trips back in time in the opening episode, he buys a newspaper and a steel box. He places the newspaper and the upgraded wedding ring into it and buries it in the back yard of his future home. Upon returning to the present, he takes his wife to the back yard. A patio is there now, and his wife, Katie, says it was installed right after they moved into the house seven years ago.

Dan picks up a sledge hammer and begins pounding into the pavement and bricks. "What are you doing?!?" Katie asks.

"Saving my marriage," he replies.

"Uh, not really," she says, as Dan continues digging. The paver bricks fly and Dan finds what he's after: The red metal box. He opens it in front of his wife. From within it, he pulls out a newspaper and hands it to her. It is dated December 31, 1997. He also pulls out the upgraded wedding ring mentioned at the beginning of the episode, and holds it up, offering it to her. She recognizes it. But how could her wedding ring be inside a box buried so many years ago? Then a look of realization crosses her face. There's only one answer: Dan's fantastic story about being a time traveler is true.

"I'll always come home." She gently slides the ring onto her finger as it begins to rain.

This was perhaps one of the coolest, most moving moments I've seen on television in a very long time. What better way to redeem one’s self of a fantastic story like "I'm a time traveler" than to be able to prove it beyond a shadow of a doubt?!?

And this was only the beginning of the series! Journeyman only got better from there.

Although this series has not yet been released on DVD, you can watch the show from beginning to end at TV's Greatest Hits: Click here.

They say that those who do not remember history are doomed to repeat it. NBC should remember its history.

I'm reminded of events in the late 1960s involving another science-fiction themed TV series that aired on NBC. Those are two words that can send NBC execs old enough to remember weeping to their mamas.

Of all the reviews I've ever read of Journeyman, not one was a disparaging comment.

Not one.

What's with the ads lately?

What is it with the increase violence and rudeness in some television commercials lately? I’m seeing it in some of the strangest places. The most recent examples of this trend includes ads from Baskin Robins and Burger King.

In the Baskin Robins ad, a parent ends up screaming into the face of a kid (not her own), “IN YOUR FACE!!!” Not only is that teaching the youngsters poor sportsmanship, but it’s just plain rude.

In the Burger King ads, their touting their new Steakhouse Burger. “It’s so special, people will think you think you’re special.” In the very first one I saw, a gym teacher actually slapped a co-worker for eating one of these and being “undeserving.” Oh yeah, that makes my mouth water and want to run out to buy one and stuff it in my face. I wonder if I’ll get slapped, too?

Bad behavior is a learned trait. So is good behavior. Why is it that bad behavior is deemed “cool” and “cutting edge?” Why can’t advertisers impress me with their products instead of some “cutting edge” behavior? Then again, they may be getting just the result they want from me.

I remembered the ads and the products. But really, is this the kind of image they want to burn into my brain? I bought a Steakhouse Burger once. I found the meat tasted like cardboard and there wasn’t enough A-1 Steak Sauce on it for my taste. Will I buy another? Nope. And nothing about the ads they’re running will convince me to change my mind.

Whatever happened to great advertising? Do you remember the McDonald’s Big Mac ad campaign from the 1970s? “Two all beef patties special sauce lettuce cheese pickles onions on a sesame seed bun.” It was catchy and advertised the product very well. It must have! Here it is some 30 years later and many still remember this ad!

How about the Nissan ad from a few years ago with G.I. Joe (with lifelike hair) picking up Barbie from her Dream House and leaving Ken behind to the tune of “You Really Got Me?” That was cool advertising!!

The best examples of advertising I’ve seen lately include Dairy Queen and their series of Waffle Cone Sundaes ads. In the first one, Miss Softserve (for want of a better name) knocks on Mr. Waffles’ door (again for want of a better name) and asks to borrow some chocolate. He hands it to her and asks what she’s going to do with it and she replies coyly “I’m just going to… pour it all over myself.” He shudders and the announcer says something like “A match made in heaven.”

Here are the follow up ads. I personally LOVED these!!

The bottom line here is that if advertisers don’t want us walking away or muting the TV when their spots come on, then they should make them entertaining!
